A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life. "Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized. The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed. Broader Political Discussions Underway In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising. Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty.
